What to Do If Your Dental Filling Falls Out

A lost filling is a dental emergency. Follow these critical steps to protect your tooth while you wait to see the dentist.

Losing a filling can be alarming, but staying calm and acting quickly protects your tooth. A lost or broken filling exposes vulnerable inner tooth structure, so it should be treated as an emergency dental filling situation in Barrhaven.

Fillings can come loose for many reasons: normal wear over years of use, biting into something hard, new decay forming around the edges, or simply the age of the restoration. Whatever the cause, the priority is to shield the exposed tooth and get professional care as soon as you can.

Step 1: Save the filling if you can

If the filling came out in one piece, keep it. Occasionally it can help us assess what happened, and it confirms the tooth is now unprotected.

Place it somewhere safe and bring it to your appointment. While a filling cannot usually be reused, having it on hand gives us useful information about the restoration and the tooth beneath it.

Step 2: Keep the area clean

Gently rinse with warm salt water and continue to brush carefully around the tooth. Keeping the area clean reduces the chance of infection while you arrange treatment.

Be gentle but thorough. The exposed surface can trap food and bacteria more easily, so rinsing after meals is a simple way to protect the tooth until you are seen.

Step 3: Protect the exposed tooth

Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold, or sugary foods that can trigger sensitivity. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can shield the tooth short term, but it is not a substitute for professional care.

Sticky and hard foods are especially risky, as they can pull at the tooth or cause a fragile edge to chip. Sticking to soft foods on the opposite side is the safest approach in the meantime.

Step 4: Manage any discomfort

If the tooth is sensitive or sore, an over-the-counter pain reliever can help, and over-the-counter dental wax can cover a sharp edge that is irritating your tongue or cheek. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the soft tissue.

These measures are only meant to keep you comfortable until your appointment, not to delay treatment. An exposed tooth needs professional attention.

Step 5: Call us right away

Contact our Barrhaven practice as soon as possible. The longer an exposed tooth goes untreated, the higher the risk of decay, infection, or fracture. We prioritize emergency cases so you are not left in discomfort.

When you call, let us know what happened and whether you are in pain. We will guide you on what to do next and get you in quickly to restore and protect the tooth.
